We were almost giving up on Selma but went to see Sturdivant Hall as a last ‘chance’. WOW!! This is a treat for anyone interested in history of the area. If you are lucky, you will be greeted by Mrs Mitsy Wilburn! She was another treat ! She initially told us the tour may last one hour plus upfront explanations. Well, you are in for a treat if you like to listen to everything you see in the house, ask questions and you will be rewarded. We enjoyed the time with Mrs Wilburn as our guide tremendously! It never became boring, there was always something else!!! In addition, this building is amazing and you would not expect anything like this in a place like Selma - especially after visiting all these fancy ‘Gone with the wind’ plantations. This one may even top most of them. Anyway, this guided tour made up for other disappointments in town especially the new ‘Lannie’s BBQ’ restaurant.
BTW: ask her (Mrs Wilburn) for other things to see, go to or restaurants!

Our tour guide, Mitzie, was so informative and obviously loves being a docent at this lovely, historic plantation home. She is inclusive to credit the slaves for excellent craftsmanship, design, engineering and of course, labor. The backstory of previous ownership prior to the Sturdivant family, was new information to our group, who had all visited previously multiple times.
A tour of Sturdivant is a must in Selma, to add to understanding of the wealthy lifestyle of that era that was possible for white landowners because they also were owners of people. It is thought-provoking to see that lavish opulence came at the expense of injustice for the actual builders.

One of the stand out highlights of our tour of the deep south. A beautiful antebellum mansion, wonderfully decorated with furnishings that fit beautifully with the style of the place. We received an excellent tour from Margaret who brought the place to life and was extremely knowledgeable about the house and the area. As ever with Alabama, we immediately felt welcomed and connected to the history of this fascinating region.

A well-preserved homeplace. The upper levels aren't easy to access for those with mobility issues, but there's lots of charm on the main levels.
