A review for their new location. A cozy spot with a small but remarkably curated selection of a wide range of books mostly highlighting social Justice, humanities, self-help and a cute children’s section that contains books with the same positive sentiments. A great spot to learn about the history of civil rights, take a moment in one of the little coves to browse and read or a wonderful spot to meet up with friends and pick up some progressive children’s books. 1977 is perfect for Montgomery and Montgomery needs 1977 books.

A truly phenomenal book store AND community space. The second you walk in, you feel at home: warm smiles welcome you and a cozy corner invites you to sit down, relax, and look through some books. If you’re interested in any type of advocacy or activism, this is the space for you. It not only has the most essential reads dating back decades, but new reads by budding activists that will transform your perspective on the world. Brace yourself, as you’ll want to buy the entire bookstore once you’re done browsing.

I could not recommend 1977 Books more. They have an excellent selection of books—including, and especially, children’s books—and merchandise that is unmatched by any store in this area, probably even the state. Love the idea of the community space too. Much needed in Montgomery! ❤️

this bookstore is everything! 1977 books is on the second floor of the kress facing the dexter ave side.

selection: the books are carefully curated by community members and subject experts and reflect a commitment to sharing the work of people from underrepresented groups. i love that the bookstore also has a resource library of zines/journals/materials about movements and abolitionist practices in other communities. AND — if there’s something that a customer thinks the bookstore should add, the store creators are open and responsive to all suggestions!

environment: the bookstore is super cozy and has special touches that visitors are encouraged to add to (like the community altar!) also, there is ample seating available and a sweet children’s section for little ones.

events: the space is open for others to hold events like book clubs and other gatherings! this is awesome because sometimes it can be hard to find space to get together in the city and this is an accessible and warm place to bring a group.

all in all, i LOVE THIS PLACE!

1977 Books is ran by some of the best community oriented humans who care about other humans needs and well being. I adore the stationary, totes and graphic tees. It’s a safe space to read a book to enhance your knowledge on social conscious matters or just meet a new friend.

It gives me hope for Montgomery that it can sustain a bookstore like this. Wonderful albeit small abolitionist and leftist collection. The volunteer working at the register was super friendly/knowledgeable and we ended up having a conversation about James Baldwin!

I am so thankful that 1977 Books exists in Montgomery. Not only does it have an exquisitely curated selection of books centered on justice and liberation, it’s also a beautiful place run by beautiful people. I’m excited to have this as my go-to bookstore and gift-giving-destination for years to come!

This bookstore is a-m-a-z-i-n-g. Beautifully curated and has books that I can’t find anywhere in the area. It’s also one of the few bookstores where the curation of books and items feels so intentional and special. I highly recommend visiting if you’re in downtown Montgomery.

Also, be sure to ask if the bookstore cat “Ham” is in, such a cutie!
